WHAT TO DO IF YOU SEE FEDERAL IMMIGRATION AGENTS
ice raids and what you can do.
WHAT’S HAPPENING
Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers have begun conducting raids all across the country.
ICE “Enforcement and Removal Operations” officers focus on identifying, arresting, detaining, and removing individuals “unlawfully” present in the USA.
There have been multiple confirmed sightings across Austin and it is especially important that everyone is aware of their rights at this time.
WHAT TO DO
In short, if you are approached by ICE...
- Don’t let them in. They are only permitted to enter your space with a judge’s order. Ask to see a judicial warrant; if they don’t have it, they can’t enter. They might try to show an administrative warrant; this does not allow them into your space.
- You have the right to remain silent. Do not answer any questions or sign any papers until you have spoken to a lawyer.
- Keep a trusted lawyer’s information on you at all times.
- If you’re comfortable, record all interactions with ICE agents. Document their names, badge numbers, phone numbers, what they were wearing, what weapons they had, what they were driving, and the exact time of your interaction.
What to do if ICE comes to your HOME....
- Do not answer the door. If you do, it’s okay. You have rights.
- Ask why they’re there. Ask for an interpreter if you need one.
- Ask to see a warrant signed by a judge. You can do this through the window or slipped under the door. If they do not have a warrant signed by a judge, do not let them in.
- If they force themselves in, do not resist.
- You and everyone in the house should remain silent. Do not answer any questions until you speak with a lawyer.
- If you are arrested, stay silent. Do not sign anything until you speak with a lawyer.
What to do if ICE comes to your WORK....
- Stay calm & get your boss.
- You have the right to remain silent.
- Ask if you are free to leave. If so, calmly walk out.
- You have the right to refuse consent to a search.
- You have the right to remain silent. You do not need to share your immigration status with anyone. You do not need to share where you are from, how you entered the country, or whether or not you are a citizen.
- If you have valid immigration documents, show them. Do not show invalid documents.
- If you are arrested, remain silent until you are speaking with a lawyer.
- You have the right to record your interaction with immigration as long as you do not interfere.
