How to Register People to Vote (March 2023)

a quick guide on becoming a VDR. 

What is a VDR?

A VDR is a Volunteer Deputy Registrar. These are volunteers who have gone through a quick course and are entrusted to register eligible people to vote.

VDR Qualifications

All VDRs must be:

  • at least 18 years of age
  • a US citizen
  • a Texas resident

VDRs cannot be:

  • Determined by a final judgment of a court exercising probate jurisdiction to be totally, mentally incapacitated or partially mentally incapacitated, without the right to vote.
  • Convicted of failing to deliver a voter application to a voter registrar.
  • Convicted of a felony or, if so convicted, you must be fully discharged of the sentence, including any term of incarceration, parole, or supervision, or completed a period of probation ordered by any court, or you were  pardoned or otherwise released from the resulting disability to vote.
  • Convicted of identity theft under Sec. 32.51 of the Texas Penal Code.

Next Steps

  • After you go to your training or take your online exam, you will receive your VDR certificate and number.
  • From there, you can obtain the necessary forms to register people to vote.
  • You must submit voter registration forms to the office within five days.

Register to Vote!

  • The deadline to register to vote is Thursday, April 6th.
  • If you're already registered to vote, consider helping others to do the same!
